EMF Focuses in on FLX3D

EMF, Evaporated Metal Films, of Ithaca NY, had a need. They were looking for large, solvent resistant plastic devices, used in their optics manufacturing process. Working with their Engineers, Finger Lakes 3D identified materials able to withstand a variety of solvents and our large format printers were able to manufacture these parts. Large parts over 9 inches in diameter were no problem. FLX3D can print up to 17 inch parts on our custom designed FFF Printers. Contact us if you need the goods delivered fast, affordable, and from professionals that can not only work with your engineers and designers, but also provide those services, if need be.

Learn the basics of 3D printing using Tinkercad a free online 3D design program. In this class you will learn how to find free designs to make your own 3D print, free of charge.

This 2 hour session was overwhelmingly well reviewed. Bill Pealer, owner of Finger Lakes 3D, brought patience and easy to understand concepts to a traditionally complicated subject matter. Learners left with new found knowledge and confidence to begin their journey into the world of 3D Printing. If you would like to schedule a community program with FLX3D, contact Bill at bill.pealer@flx3d.com to learn more. FLX3D has programming that ranges from printer operation and maintenance, to understanding 3D models and basic modeling techniques. All with readily available free tools. If you have a gmail account, you can get into CAD today! You’ll be surprised how affordable this training is and includes a 3D Printer for your establishment.

FLX3D and STEAM: FLCC Summer Session

Bill Pealer, owner of Finger Lakes 3D, will be hosting a couple sessions at the FLCC Summer Steam Camp! In Summer 2022, “Logos and Branding 101” was a successful and popular session for all 6-8 graders in attendance. Campers were introduced to concepts such as typography and positive and negative space. Soft skills such as brainstorming, critique, and team work were emphasized. Check out the fantastic youth art work and finished product from concept to merchandise . This summer Bill will be expanding this session with more tech and hands-on opportunities for young makers.

FLX3D & ITT Goulds: Flexible Printing with Rigid Specifications

In April 2021 a specialist at ITT Goulds in Seneca Falls NY reached out to Finger Lakes 3D with a question and a challenge.  “Can you 3D print Polyurethane tags at our specified resolution and can you reliably make 20+ tags a day?”

PU is notoriously hard to print- jamming often and with poor resolution. We stepped up to the build plate.  With Finger Lakes 3D, we have the know how and skills to FFF print most plastics. With our proprietary extruders, custom manufactured for Polyurethane, we exceeded the specification demands. Offering 99% tooling free prints than are production ready – right from the bed.  We now provide tags for 2 different production lines that operate daily. Foundry operators prefer the bright colors and PU for ease of application and mold-release. No sharp metal, no tooling.  It is resistant to the petroleum compounds in the casting sand and can withstand the high compression of the mold making process.  Since this is a digital work-flow, fonts, spacing, and shape of tags has  minimal impact on costs or production turnaround.

If you use metal embossing for your fabrication or product identification, contact Finger Lakes 3D for a sample and a quote.

FLX3D in the news: BIGGER PICTURE: Coronavirus crisis and benevolence on a local level

Featured in the Finger Lakes Times, on March 23, 2020. FLX3D quickly designed and printed washable mask covers.   Using 3M 1900 Ultra Allergan disposable air filter, FLX3D, with material support from the residents of Geneva, NY,  printed and donated over 300 masks. When no masks were available commercially anywhere for months, FLX3D delivered 3d printed masks to essential workers in healthcare, food service, first responders, and public employees.

Geneva Middle School- Geared up, and running.

Last month I received a donation from Jim DeVaney who works at TCS Inc. in Rochester NY.  They had two MakerBot Replicator II printers headed for the scrap heap. Jim contacted me and asked if I could get them running. If so, he would like to see them donated to an appropriate Geneva School program.  Well, I am pleased to announce the first one was fixed and received by Mr. Mauchly at the Geneva Middle School. Mr. Mauchly is the Technology Teacher.  After we set up the MB Rep II, he mentioned his V5 Replicator was a nightmare to operate and swap filament.  I took a look, found the problem and spent some time with him. After a crash course in MakerBot (direct extrusion based) tips and tricks, including some basics in the material science of PLA and PETG, he is now running on all cylinders with both printers operating as intended.  It was very exciting to see the kids buzz around the printers as we ran some test files.  The 3D program was largely stalled due to major short comings with MakerBot’s Customer training and educational support.   It is that reason why I am starting this effort to get 3D printing and operation running in educational settings. There is a large gap in the customer support and training.  That gap is where FLX3D comes in.  I provide some infill for those gaps (3D printing joke).
